Surfing has always been about much more than riding waves.
At its best, surfing is about respect—for the ocean, for fellow surfers, and for the community that gathers along our beaches. Those values are exactly what the Ocean City Surf Club has worked to promote for years, making it one of the most respected organizations on Delmarva.
I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been inducted into the Ocean City Surf Club Legends Hall of Fame.
For many people, a surfing club might sound like it's only about competitions or catching the perfect wave. In reality, the Ocean City Surf Club has become a cornerstone of our coastal community. As a nonprofit organization, the club supports scholarships for local students, promotes environmental stewardship through beach cleanup initiatives, encourages volunteerism, and works to preserve the rich surfing heritage of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. Their mission is built around giving back to the community while fostering respect for the ocean and the people who enjoy it.
One of the ways the club preserves that history is through the Ocean City Surf Club Legends Hall of Fame. Each year, individuals who have made lasting contributions to the local surfing community are recognized for helping shape the sport and the culture that surrounds it. Being included among so many surfers, pioneers, mentors, and friends whose names have become part of Ocean City's surfing history is truly one of the greatest honors of my life. And I was awarded a pink conch shell like mentioned in the Big Wave Dave song by Nuke The Soup. 🎵 Listen to the Big Wave Dave song on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g36atQx0yFc&list=RDg36atQx0yFc&start_radio=1
Over the years, I've been fortunate to experience surfing not only as a sport, but as a lifelong teacher. The ocean has a way of teaching patience, humility, perseverance, and respect. Those lessons have stayed with me both in and out of the water.
Those same values inspired the creation of Big Wave Dave Adventures.
The goal has always been simple: help children discover the excitement of surfing while learning how to stay safe in the ocean. Through stories, colorful illustrations, and fun activities, the series introduces young readers to topics such as surf safety, beach flags, tides, rip currents, the buddy system, and caring for our beaches. My hope is that today's young readers become tomorrow's confident, respectful ocean stewards.
Being recognized by the Ocean City Surf Club makes that mission even more meaningful. It serves as a reminder that passing along knowledge and encouraging the next generation are just as important as catching the next great wave.
If you're visiting Ocean City, I'm also excited to share that the complete Big Wave Dave Adventures book series is now available locally at K-Coast Surf Shop. It's a wonderful opportunity for families to take home stories that combine adventure with practical ocean safety lessons while supporting a locally owned surf shop that has long been part of our beach community.
I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Ocean City Surf Club, my fellow inductees, my family, friends, and everyone who has shared the journey over the years. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who continues to encourage young people to respect the ocean, protect our beaches, and discover the joy of surfing.
The waves may only last a few moments, but the lessons—and the friendships—they create can last a lifetime.

Big Wave Dave is a very humble, passionate, one-of-a-kind guy. I'm happy to see him get this recognition. Surf on BWD! Stay safe. 🏄♂️ 🌊
